Get Involved!
The Burnaby Lake Park Association has 3 main programs at Burnaby Lake that welcomes volunteers of all skill levels and ages. Individuals and groups are invited to attend any of the events or programs and no ongoing time commitment is required. Some volunteers chose to come to only one event or program while others enjoy volunteering for everything year round.
If you enjoy the outdoors, fresh air and getting a little education on Birds, Nest Boxes, invasive plant species, butterflies and beneficial plants, then you will enjoy volunteering with the Burnaby Lake Park Association.

at Burnaby Lake Regional Park
Nest Box Program
More than 200 nest boxes around Burnaby Lake Regional Park provide homes for swallows, chickadees, wood ducks and flying squirrels. From January to March, join members of BLPA and BCIT to help clean and repair nest boxes. As a volunteer you’ll learn techniques for cleaning and repairing nest boxes and recording nesting activity, as well as basic bird identification. Come out once or sign up for one or two weekend afternoons in January and February. If you are interested in helping with ongoing monitoring, you can spend an afternoon or evening in the spring and summer months observing and collecting data on the nest boxes.
Weedbusters
What do Scotch broom, policeman's helmet, English ivy and Himalayan blackberry have in common? They are all invasive species - non-native plants that have become established and are crowing out native species. You can help! Work parties are fun, but physically taxing and best suited to those with a basic level of fitness and agility. For a list of upcoming dates for Weedbusters work parties, click here.
Butterfly Garden
Master gardeners take care of the butterfly garden by the Burnaby Lake Nature House. Judy with the Master Gardeners always welcomes volunteers to help with planting, weeding, and watering.
Burnaby Lake Park Association’s Annual Nature Walks at Burnaby Lake Regional Park
We host 2 free nature walks each year, one in June to celebrate Environment Week and a Christmas walk in December. Come out and learn more about the beautiful flora and fauna in the park. Then join us for refreshments.
